The Story Behind the Pieces: A Wardrobe from the Golden Age of Parisian Art

A Wardrobe from the Golden Age of Parisian Art

In this series, we uncover the stories behind some of the most exceptional pieces to pass through ReSee. From the designers who conceived them to the women who wore them, the collections they belonged to, and the cultural moments they represent.

___________

For more than fifty years, these pieces remained within the same family, passing through three generations before arriving at ReSee.

Their original owner was one of the women who helped shape the post-war Paris art world. Beginning her career alongside legendary gallerist Daniel Cordier, she went on to play an important role in Paris' international art market.

Throughout her life, she counted among her friends and contemporaries many of the twentieth century's most celebrated artists, including Jean Dubuffet, Diego Giacometti, Claude Lalanne, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and David Hockney.

Fashion was naturally a part of that world.

A devoted Yves Saint Laurent client, she purchased directly from the house and wore these pieces to exhibition openings, charity dinners, auctions, and travels across Europe. They were never assembled as a collection, but acquired over a lifetime and worn by someone living at the centre of Paris' cultural life.

Today, after more than fifty years in the same family, they offer a rare glimpse into a remarkable life—and the extraordinary world in which it unfolded.

For us, provenance is about more than ownership. It is about preserving the stories behind extraordinary garments. The most beautiful pieces become even more meaningful when you know where they have been, who wore them, and the life they quietly witnessed. We are honoured to share the next chapter of this remarkable wardrobe.

At ReSee, every one of our vintage pieces comes with a story. This is, in large part, thanks to our unmatched community of consignors.

Though parting with such sartorial treasures may not be easy, the exceptional personal care we put into ensuring that they will go on to live a second (or, sometimes even, a third, fourth, or fifth) life offers a thrill — one rivaled only by that of the besotted shopper who adds them to her wardrobe.
